Bad Editors

Just like every profession, there are always bad apples. People who are cruel or incompetent and don't see how mean they're being.
Unfortunately, I've worked with a few bad editors in my time. It makes me appreciate the good editors more, let me tell you.
First, what is a bad editor? How can you tell?
They insult you or your work
They don't have anything positive to say
Their advice is unhelpful
They try to rewrite your story instead of helping it improve
They constantly revise their own edits, making unnecessary changes
And so on. There are many ways to be a bad editor. You'll know right away. Meanwhile, a good editor will give you helpful suggestions with kindness instead of just saying "fix this".
What are you supposed to do if you get a bad editor?
If you hired them, never work with them again. That's easy.
But what if they're given to you by a publisher and you have a contract?
That's a bit trickier. First off, remain professional and civil. Just because they're rude doesn't mean you have to be. Calmly explain your concerns and don't be afraid to disagree on edits.
It can be a disheartening, frustrating experience, but remember: YOU'RE the writer. This is YOUR story, no matter what the editor says, and you will always have the final say. Follow your heart, be true to your story, and remember that not all editors are jerks. Some are, and karma will catch up to them.
Take care, and be gentle with yourself.
Love,
Dana
